Say what?

TL;DR: Moneymaker has questionable taste in friends, Dave Whitis is apparently a thief and Mike McNeil has poor communication skills.

Cliff’s: Chris Moneymaker’s former friend Dave Whitis allegedly borrowed money from Mike “PotOdds3″ McNeil and “dusted off” another 15k on McNeil’s UB account in an unauthorized drunken stupor.

Whitis promised McNeil payback and seemed poised to deliver thanks to a deep run in a big WCOOP event. Just one problem: He was allegedly playing the tournament on Moneymaker’s PokerStars account.

Says McNeil:

During WCOOP event #5, a tournament that was 10k to enter, “Money800″ was making a deep run. I started receiving calls from Dave as he got closer to the final table. He was telling me his hands, calling me when he got a premium hand so that I could watch his chips moving. Something like, “got aces here, watch this. etc” His play backed up what he was telling me. Of course, knowing Dave, I wasn’t convinced that it was him playing.

Fast-forward several years to this week. Moneymaker received a message from McNeil about the debts. The contents of the message is apparently open to some interpretation.

Chris Moneymaker tells it this way:

Got a private message from a guy I have never met on facebook today. The message below is what he sent me. He told me dave owes him 50k but he would let me settle for 10k and he would not post the transcript [editor: the WCOOP debacle previously mentioned] below. Well I thought I would save him the trouble of posting and do it for him and give my response.

Moneymaker added:

The reason I was sent this I think was to pay Dave’s debt for him, however, I am owed 24k by him and no longer associated with him. For years he used me name to bet with bookies and get loans. When people approached me I always told them I knew dave and to be careful. After April 15th dave lost his income and turned super sleezy so I would heed the warning below if you run accross him

But did Moneymaker ever let Whitis play on his account (a major no-no) on PS?

The part that bothers me is the allegation about the WCOOP in 2008. Dave spent every WCOOP from 2004 to 2010 at my house playing these events with me. It was good to have poker company while playing the long hours. I put him in many of the smaller events and he got 40% of the action. The tournament the guy is refrencing is the big 10k buyin and I remember it well. I called Kevin Saul’s button shove from the big blind with K-6 off. Dave was pissed it was a bad play but with my current bb I thought the call was standard. Anyway, Dave was with me during the tournament and is constantly on the phone so I dont doubt he spoke to this guy throughout the tournament.

McNeil claims he never actually asked Moneymaker for payment and was only referencing the amount he would like to get from Whitis. You can read the thread yourself and see what conclusion you draw.
